Will Nest, can Nest, answer the competitive bell and rise to the challenge? The Prestige is a tour de force featuring elegant engineering and Nouveau Décor. Without a response from Nest, it appears Honeywell will take command of one of the largest and most lucrative markets in the HVAC industry.
Even the high-end DIY’s will reconsider once they give the Prestige IAQ a good once over. With fan control and the additional wireless components, the feature rich Prestige can meet the vast majority of residential and light commercial applications.

The big complaint about the Nest was recovery from an extended power failure; it could lead to frozen pipes in cold climates. Will the prestige IAQ come back up and start heating if required?
I think normal consumers are going to like the color options and I thing the diagnostics screen will come in handy for service calls or just preventative maintenance.
At one time or another….EVERY child needs to grow up and LEAVE the NEST….Honeywell looks like they are providing the vehicle….I LOVE this FERRARI….
Honeywell have really lifted the bar with this system. Sounds like they have ironed out the kinks for a system that can compete with Nest and other DIY install programmable thermostats. But are Honeywell being too cautious on insisting on HVAC installation? They may need to find a way to reach out to high end DIY installers if they really hope to make inroads to the Next demographic. Either way, this is a highly resolved programmable thermostat in a very well designed package.
Well, hardly innovative – just another touchscreen app, but nice to see the legacy control industry wake up.
Nest is a creative and elegant product – whether one works better than the other is less relevant. Kinda like comparing an iPhone to a blackberry – leading with style and innovation vs. following with a me-too product.
Nevertheless a step in the right direction for the HVAC world.

Sorry, response to comment was delayed. The Prestige does have a coin-sized battery to provide power during short periods of power loss or brown outs. To your question of will the Prestige resume heating when power is restored: YES. The Prestige will resume with these factory default settings until reprogrammed.

As a follow up to Ken Smyers answer on the operation of the Prestige thermostat during a power outage – once power is restored, the thermostat returns to operation exactly as it was prior to the power outage, with all scheduling, settings and installer set up options having been retained in its memory. The only function of the coin-sized battery is to keep time and day updated in the background during a power outage, so when power is restored the thermostat has the right time and date and immediately goes back into operation with no need for adjustment or updating by the end user.
When you think about it, there’s really no need for the thermostat to be energized during a power outage since the HVAC equipment would also be without power. There’s a ton of information on Honeywell’s thermostats at http://www.forwardthinking.honeywell.com, with some nice videos on key features.
