February 24, 2014: DOE believes an “All of the Above” Energy strategy must be pursued with an “All of the Above” Innovation Strategy. As we have demonstrated through our investments in fundamental research and development, ambitious deployments under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and public-driven activities like the American Energy Data Challenge, we are committed to supporting public and private innovation to build a smarter, cleaner and more resilient grid.
The Electric Power Board (EPB) of Chattanooga, part of DOE’s Smart Grid Investment Grant Program, is doing its part to drive innovation at the local level by participating in a city-wide program to spur innovation and economic growth. In its third year, GIGTANK is “the world’s only innovation accelerator connected to a metro-wide fiber optic network” for entrepreneurs to develop new ideas for “enabling next-generation businesses to go to market today.”
This year GIGTANK invites smart grid innovators to submit ideas and partner with “the first city in the Western Hemisphere to have gigabit per second fiber Internet accessible to the entire city grid,” providing a “playground” for inventors and developers to create and refine new concepts and accelerate their market readiness. A very high bandwidth communication network, EPB uses it to connect, communicate with, and control most of their smart grid equipment, making GIGTANK for smart grid a great opportunity to advance the state-of-the-art.
Submissions are due March 14, 2014. Now is the time to act so please review the application process and take advantage of this tremendous opportunity for leadership in the emerging smart grid industry. Please spread the word to those who might be interested.
