We met Ronald Ro at the Realcomm/IBcon launch pad. And we are very glad we did! As you can see in the video, Ronald and his team at Awair, have re-imagined air sensors and created a sensor that tracks invisible fine dust and chemicals in air and gives a personalized recommendation to help occupants stay safe and healthy. Think this will play in the $300 part of the 3-30-300 metric? [Read more…]
Over the last several years, Ken and I have noticed and reported, the influx of new smart building control players from Silicon Valley. This year, at RealComm|IBcon, we were amazed at how many smart building providers from around the world showed up with noteworthy smart building solutions.
ControlTrends had the opportunity to interview Rajavel Subramanian of Facilio at the Realcomm20/IBcon Conference Live Product Launchpad. Facilio is new to the North American market and is seeking to develop a channel with Niagara partners. Facilio offers a great facility management product for buildings in the 50,000 to 100,000 square foot range, and creates optimal efficiencies for the C-Suite by visualizing data in real-time for a multitude of applications including fault diagnostics, fault detection, and generating work orders into a mobile app. For more information, visit Facilio.
Ken and I have seen companies like Intel, Dell, Google and others showing up more and more at meetings like RealComm Ibcon and have wondered how they will affect the smart buildings controls world as we know it. We have gone back and forth wondering if the players from Silicon Valley had nefarious motives that would leave the players in the ControlTrends community as road kill, or if they were coming to play nice and work with the existing smart building controls players.
On this video, Ken does a little detective work at the 2018 RealComm Ibcon conference and investigates how Microsoft is stepping into our world. Nice job Ken!
I had a chance to meet Derek McGarry, the Head Building Performance Engineer at Abundant Power. Abundant Power out of Charlotte, North Carolina, provides solution focused services, great customer service, and profit driven outcomes so that their customers get the most value out of Analytics, and as we all know making data actionable and useful is easier said than done. After hearing what Derek has to say, I believe that Abundant Power knows how to use data to make buldings smarter. And with great smart building controls integrators like McKenney’s, Atlanta, using their product, they are keeping very good company.
No matter how good your smart building controls are, if the power coming to them is off, the controls won’t work the way they should. Get the power right and you are on your way to creating a great smart building controls system.

Bert Van Hoof tells us about Microsoft’s ability to help influence what “SMART” means in the smart building context and how their new Azure platform capabilities, which Microsoft refers to as Spacial Intelligence, are helping their partners realize their innovation goals in new global markets. Willow’s CEO and Co-Founder, Josh Ridley, explains that without a Digital Twin, you don’t really have a user experience. Willow is about the digital environment for a physical world. Great Willow demonstration follows.
Our ControlTrends interview with KMC’s VP of Business Development, Scott Taylor, at the vendor show at the 2018 Realcomm|IBcon Conference was a great opportunity to hear the latest from KMC Controls, who offers one of the industry’s most comprehensive array of options that allow contractors to use the right-sized and right-priced software tool, namely, the KMC Commander, for small to mid-sized buildings. And, as Scott says, “Our industry is evolving and we are seeing innovations where contractors are leasing connectivity (in lieu of traditional service contracts) that embed the contractor with their customers, while generating recurring revenue.”
