Ken stopped by the Functional Devices booth at the 2017 AHR Show and spoke with Maggie Talbert, Functional Devices’ North East Sales Manager, Inc. Maggie reviews several new products including the PSH550-UPS-BC, which is an Enclosed BACnet Network 550 VA UPS Backup Power Control Center that can be integrated into your BACnet network to monitor these variables/integer values. Whether it is for environmental or monetary reasons, many people constantly look for ways to save energy. I am one of those people, and I have implemented many energy saving technologies in my own home. I have automated lighting, a smart thermostat which controls a high efficiency heat pump, and many energy saving appliances. These additions have cut my average monthly electric bill by about 10%. While that might not be a lot of money back in my pocket, big energy users like office buildings and hotels can realize large savings with small efforts.
Problem #1: Leaving lights on in an unoccupied office or meeting room can be a big waste of electricity, and no one remembers to turn them off every time.
Solution #1: Our EnOcean® wireless RIB® products can be paired with an occupancy sensor to control lighting in two different modes.
The first mode, Auto ON, allows the light to be controlled by the sensor alone. When occupancy is detected, the lighting load turns ON and remains ON until 30 minutes after the last motion detection. The other mode, Manual ON-Auto OFF, allows a wireless rocker switch to also be linked to the control device. In this mode, the rocker switch can control the ON/OFF function of the light load, and the occupancy sensor will turn the load OFF 30 minutes after the last motion detection.
Problem #2: Another application that I am receiving more frequent inquiries about is hotel room energy management. The concern is that a guest would unknowingly leave a hotel room window or patio door open while the room is being heated or cooled. This would, at the least, waste energy, and at the worst, potentially damage the HVAC system.
Solution #2: Fortunately, we have a solution using an EnOcean enabled RIB® relay and one or more wireless door/window sensors (WDWS-EN3). When linked with any of our EnOcean® relay devices, the door/window sensor sends a CLOSE command when the window or door is closed and an OPEN command when the window or door is opened.
This application can also utilize an alarm and/or delay mode. The alarm mode allows multiple sensors to be linked to one control device. In this mode, all linked sensors would need to send a CLOSE command for the load to turn ON. The delay mode adds a 10 second delay before the relay will turn ON and a 90 second delay before the relay will turn OFF. The 90 second delay allows door/window sensors to temporarily open and close without affecting the load, and it will prevent the HVAC unit from short cycling.

Alarm Fault Application: When the Latch/Fault Input is Closed (Normal state), the Relay is activated, and Red LED is Off. When Latch/Fault Input Opens (Alarm state), the Relay deactivates, and Red LED turns On. Until the Latch/ Fault Input is Closed AND either power is cycled or the RESET button is pressed, relay will remain in the Alarm state.
• Fault conditions must last for at least 500 ms in order for the unit to go into Alarm state.
• Reset signal, whether via pushbutton or power cycling, must last for at least 30 ms in order to reset the device to go from Alarm state to Normal state.

The EnOcean technology is an energy harvesting wireless technology used primarily in building automation systems; but is also applied to other applications in industry, transportation, logistics and smart homes. Modules based on EnOcean technology combine micro energy converters with ultra low power electronics and enable wireless communications between batteryless wireless sensors, switches, controllers and gateways. In March 2012, the EnOcean wireless standard was ratified as the international standard ISO/IEC 14543-3-10. The standard covers the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) layers 1-3 which are the physical, data link and networking layers. The energy harvesting wireless modules are manufactured and marketed by the company EnOcean which is based in Oberhaching, Germany.
Our AHU Fan Safety Alarm Circuits feature a 24 Vac/dc power input, one master relay, and a choice of either six (RIBMNLB-6NO), four (RIBMNLB-4NO), or two (RIBMNLB-2NO) alarm circuits. Below is a list of new features and their benefits:
* The bypass switch moved from the coil of the alarm input relays to the relay’s N/O contact controlling the master relay.
* If an alarm input relay is bypassed, the coil is not continually energized.
* If an alarm input relay should fail, it can be bypassed and the alarm input moved to a spare relay.
* The status output contact of an alarm input relay changed from N/C to N/O.
* This provides a fail safe signal to the control panel. The control panel will know if a safety trips or if a wiring circuit is open.
* The main output contacts (from the master relay) changed to two independent N/O contacts. Through the use of board mounted jumpers, the output terminals for these independent N/O contacts can be made wet or dry.
* Both supply and return fan VFDs can be controlled without the use of additional relays.
* Fixed terminal connections have been replaced with removable terminal connections.
* Easy termination
* Input safeties and status outputs can easily be moved from one alarm input relay to a different alarm input relay, if needed.
* Removable terminals provide better conductor isolation from other board components, greatly reducing the possibility of accidental shorts during the termination process.
