Episode 234: ControlTalk NOW — Smart Buildings PodCast for week ending August 6, 2017 features more great insight from energy expert, Mark Jewell, and two deep-dive interviews with AutomatedBuildings.com’s, Ken Sinclair, and Optergy’s president, Steve Guzelimian. Make sure to register for upcoming webinars from Belimo, ACI’s, and Schneider Electric.
ControlTalk NOW guest Mark Jewel, renowned expert trainer and coach, business consultant, and solutions designer. ControlTalk NOW’s first interview is with Ken Sinclair who reviews his August edition of AutomatedBuildings.com. Ken takes us on a profound tour of the dogged progression towards autonomous devices and autonomous buildings. Ken’s editorial first links us to the relevant technology thought-leaders, while the body of the August edition provides an excellent array of perspectives from various industry experts. Ken even spices things up a bit with some info on CryptoCurrency, Blockchain, and Bitcoin. The once cloud-bound flow of data is in flux. The edge is fogging up, and Hey You! — Get off of my Cloud!
ControlTalk NOW’s second guest interview is with Steve Guzelimian, President, Optergy. Steve offers the following analogy with regards to combining BMS and EMS Analogy: “It could be said that operating a building is analogous to driving a car. If the driver has visibility of the road, feedback from gauges and a steering wheel, they will be in full control. Take away the driver’s road visibility or feedback from gauges; they will crash or run out of fuel. Remove the driver’s steering wheel, and inevitably the car will crash on the first corner. BMS is the steering wheel, EMS is the visibility and feedback.”

Room Controllers, How Much Do You Know? Take the Schneider Electric Q & A. What exactly is a “Room Controller?” It’s fully configurable and application specific Terminal Unit Controller. It has built in space temperature with an option for remote temperature sensing. In addition, it can be configured with on board humidity and occupancy (PIR) sensing or those sensors can be external to the controller.

Introduction to Data Modeling, Haystack Tagging and the Benefits. 30 Minutes with Lynxspring Webinar Series. There is no question that data is impacting the building automation, energy management, and smart buildings markets. The data produced by equipment, systems, and smart devices now has more potential value than the devices themselves. However, with all the data now available at our fingertips, it turns out that it’s one thing to have access to data; it’s another to make it useful and actionable.
Ken and Eric, the ControlTrends Guys, Interviewed on RealComm Live at 2017 RealComm|IBcon. Ken and I, the ControlTrends Guys, normally the interviewers, had the table turned on us — as we became the interviewees, at the 2017 RealComm|IBcon in San Diego. Jerry asked us some challenging questions that allowed us the opportunity to highlight the ControlTrends Community, review the hot button trends in our industry and how they relate to the RealComm|IBcom Community, as well as talk about some of the great people, solution providers, MSIs, and vendors leading the way in the Building Automation industry.
Making HVACR More Interesting Series – Comfort in a Flash: Carrier to Join National Apartment Association’s Maintenance Mania® Competition. ControlTrends is committed to promoting our HVAC industry, which according to a 2015 report from the HVACR Workforce Development Foundation, cited there were 220,734 HVACR job postings in 2014 – twice as many as in the oil and gas industry (109,323), making HVACR one of the fastest growing industries in North America. We have a fascinating and challenging industry and we must do what we can to attract and inspire more of the young workforce to join the HVACR industry.
Making HVACR More Interesting Series: National Signing Day Comes to the Skilled Trades from the NEWS. ControlTrends’ second post in our Making HVACR More Interesting Series, is from an insightful article written by Nick Kostora, Staff Writer, at the NEWS, who captures the innovative spirit behind one of the most exciting moments in the career of a student becoming a skilled tradesmen, by using media event momentum typically associated with the sports world, to create an equally awesome event for the future HVAC professional, the National Technical Letter of Intent Signing Day.
Making HVACR More Interesting Series: American Boiler Manufacturing Association Awards (ABMA) 2017 Randy Rawson Scholarships. This ControlTrends’s Making HVACR More Interesting Series comes from another great industry organization, the American Boiler Manufacturing Association (ABMA), and annual their Randy Rawson Scholarship Program, which has awarded over $150,000 since its inception. This program is another opportunity to recognize and reward the future stars of our industry.
What exactly is a “Room Controller?” It’s fully configurable and application specific Terminal Unit Controller. It has built in space temperature with an option for remote temperature sensing. In addition, it can be configured with on board humidity and occupancy (PIR) sensing or those sensors can be external to the controller.
There are additional inputs and outputs available for use with sequences that relate to the specific terminal unit requirements like outside air, mixed air, discharge air CO2 control, air flow control etc. You can add a ZigBee wireless communication card that allows for remote wireless occupancy, door and window monitoring for HVAC sequences. Specific to the SE8000 (always has BACnet on board) is the new wireless temperature, humidity and CO2 sensing. All models can add BACnet or ZigBee communications. All the HVAC control objects on board the controller are BACnet objects and can be read/written to when part of a communicating BMS.
What are the types of terminal units that it can be applied to? Fan coil units 2/4 pipe, roof top units, heat pumps, and indoor air quality applications. There are two series available, SE7000 and SE8000. The SE7000 series has a built-in user interface with a built-in configuration utility and an LCD display. Models are selected based on output configuration. The SE8000 was the natural progression of the SE7000 with all the same capabilities. The SE8000 has a color touch screen interface with a built-in configuration utility, it comes with wired BACnet communication on board. The SE8000 always has temperature on board and like the SE7000 you can add humidity, CO2 and occupancy sensing. Configuration selections are prompted and descriptions are in a language that HVAC proficient technicians can understand. There are more than 200 points on a single controller. The room controllers are manufactured with default parameters that allows them to provide control as soon as they are powered and connected.
Can I have on board schedules on a room controller? In the SE7000 product line only the roof top unit and heat pump controllers (SE7600 series) have an integrated schedule. All models in the SE8000 product line have an integrated schedule.
What about changing the readout for Celsius or Fahrenheit? All our room controllers can display Celsius or Fahrenheit. In addition the SE8000 series supports up to 22 languages.
How is it installed? Typically, the unit is hardwired to the HVAC terminal unit and if it is a retrofit, you can reuse existing wiring. There is no specialized labor needed and you can install one device in less than 15 minutes. You can network controllers via BACnet MSTP or ZigBee (requires a gateway to convert points to BACnet IP) and some models in the SE7000 series will support LON. The SE8000 can support two networks simultaneously (BACnet MSTP and ZigBee wireless).
Is it suited to any building type? These controllers have been used for Hotels, Dorm rooms, K-12 classrooms, College classrooms, Commercial buildings, retail spaces, historical buildings, medical centers, airports and much more. Hotels like the SE8000 because of the ability to change the language, screen or logo right at the device. You can also connect via ZigBee to additional sensors such as window and door contacts. And, it will integrate with the property management system (PMS). We have a lot of heritage buildings where a hardwired solution will not work within the building aesthetics. You will find the multi-zone controller in office buildings and leased space because of its wireless network capability. Today, we have over a million room controllers installed. It is also a favorite with schools because you can send custom messages to the screen for notifications and alerts. The controllers are often used with Building Expert, our “out of the box” BMS specifically designed for the small to mid-size building.
Can it be customized? Only in our SE8000 product line. We have a library of LUA (open source programming language) scripts for most applications. Our engineering team also works with customers if they have unique requirements.
What are the advantages of using a Room Controller? It has an easy to understand user interface that gives you a thermostat like user experience. The interface can be customized to increase ease of use and aesthetics. The controller comes with an on-board temperature sensor and you can embed humidity sensing, CO2 and occupancy sensing. You have up to 4 AO/5 DO and seven additional external inputs and the ability to add 10 wireless children. All of this adds up to flexibility allowing for use of the standard included and non-standard sequences of operation. No specialized installation is required, they are configurable, so you don’t need to be a programmer or engineer.
Are there any new advances coming this year? This year, we launched the embedded CO2 sensor. Later in the year, we will release a wireless Temperature/Humidity/CO2 sensor and VAV specific LUA script for the SE8000.
Where can we find more information? This link will take you to an Interactive Designer where you can design the enclosure, fascia, and screen. There are also videos at this link. And quickly find a partner number with this guide.
Join us as we celebrate the Beatles and stretch our Liverpool experience into what’s happening in the Smart Building Renaissance. What’s exciting about the Beatles is that they took different styles of music and made it into their own thing — that was something new, and incredible, and thrilling. As more companies get behind the idea of the Smart Building Renaissance, we will continue to see new players reordering different approaches to the variety of buildings that make up our industry with new technologies.
Congratulations, once again to EasyIO on a fantastic and successful Global EasyIO Partner Event as they delivered on all fronts: Great networking, entertainment, and above-all, the value-added additions made to their product portfolio; especially, the FS-32 and new wireless controllers with next-gen applications.
ControlTrends followed John Lennon and Paul McCartney for a short while through the streets of Liverpool, chasing down the names and places that we’ll never forget. Yet, the Beatles phenomena was that made of a team, and without George Harrison, Brian Epstein, and Ringo Starr, they might have never reached critical mass.
Please note the two video corrections: The German city referenced should have been Hamburg, not Hanover and the Church reference of St. Andrews, should have been St. James. Apologies.
One another note, as our industry moves forward, with non-traditional companies like Intel, Dell, or whomever, perhaps playing the figurative role of Lennon and McCartney, recording the new hits, not exactly of our industry, this recent experience has allowed us to better appreciate the really great accomplishments of control companies like Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Siemens, and Schneider Electric and the many others — who have made the comforts that we take for granted the world over, so routine and possible. Not to insinuate that they aren’t every bit in the future mix!
