Is Temperature Control at the Heart of a Contextualized Experience? Alaska Airlines Mashes with Nest

One of the trends that Ken Smyers and I have been tracking on ControlTrends is a concept called Contextualization. One definition of Contextualization is taking different ideas or things and using them in different contexts to create a new experience. We have talked about the concept of “mash ups” in the music industry and how we believe mashing up different things or re-contextualizing them is at the heart of modern day innovation and will be the key to product differentiation in a world that has too many products chasing too few customers. As you can see from this video two unlikely industries and individuals have found a way to mash up and re-contextualize a very common experience. How soon will this concept find it’s way into our industry? Hmmmm, I wonder why Google bought Nest?
