JAVA Plug-in, Applet and the Niagara Framework

The next “30 Minutes with Lynxspring”, our monthly webinar series featuring Lynxspring subject-matter experts and special guests, is scheduled for Wednesday, July 20th at 12:00 PM CDT. July’s Webinar looks at the JAVA Plug-In and Applet with the Niagara Framework.

As you may have heard earlier this year, Oracle announced plans to discontinue the Java browser plugin. Many browser vendors have begun efforts to or announced timelines for the removal of and deprecating of browser JAVA plugins including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Safari.

While there is no set date announced for the closure of Java browser plugin, it will be removed from the Oracle JDK 9 release which is scheduled sometime in September and removed from the Oracle JDK and JRE in future Java SE releases. This will have some cause and affect with Niagara AX and those few remaining R2 installations still running. In particular, while the system(s) will still operate, you will lose your interface and not have the ability to access the systems via a Web browser. This is a software issue that affects all brands of Niagara AX and R2, regardless of manufacturer or provider.

Lynxspring’s Chris Ryan, Director of Engineering, takes a look at the JAVA Plug-in and applet and what this means. He also reviews Lynxspring’s recommendation options for moving forward.
