Is the NEST full ?

Not quite. The engineers of the NEST thermostat have done it again. There is a new hatch-ling coming due the fall of 2013.

The newest innovation?  The NEST PROTECT…A new smoke detector. Wrapped up in a highly engineered package  the stunning looking NEST PROTECT is exactly what you would expect from the “out of the box” engineers of the NEST products. The NEST PROTECT talking (DID I SAY TALKING) smoke detector has several new features for the tech minded owner….

FEATURES:

Microchip…An embedded system-on-a-chip interacts with the unit’s sensors, stores data, and communicates with other devices on the network.

Carbon Monoxide Sensor…If unsafe levels are detected, Protect will instruct the NEST THERMOSTAT to shut off the furnace.

Speaker…Verbal warnings alert users to a possible danger before horn blare. A hand wave silences the voice.

Button… Used to silence or test the smoke detector large enough to poke it with a broom handle.

Lithium Batteries…Power pack lasts about 7 years

Sensors… will detect ambient light, heat, humidity, movement, and smoke particles.

Horn… 85 decibel horn for CO or fire hazard.

Color Ring…When your lights go out, PROTECT briefly glows green to show it is working, soft white when someone passes beneath it, and yellow when batteries need replacing.

Let’s knock some of the sugar coating of this new product and see what we have…

Talking smoke detector…Sounds a little to gimmicky to me…This is a safety device, the voice is to allow users not to jump out of their skin and cancel the warnings before the horn goes off, and the complaint against older smoke detectors  is disabling the device because of the horn. I think I would cancel “THE VOICE” as quick as I would cancel the voice in my GPS that constantly tells me “OFF ROUTE RECALCULATING”.

Beautiful design…Like I really notice the smoke detector as I wall down my hallway with 10 foot ceilings.

Call my phone feature…I would rather it call the fire department like a good security system would.

Button…Now that’s a useful feature no more looking for a ladder to shut of the detector mounted in my 10 foot ceilings.

There are features that I can nit-pick but I won’t… but do they really add up to a $130.00 price tag. I don’t think I would fit in that market…

  1. Yes, it will mesh with the Nest thermostat. When a carbon monoxide leak is detected the NEST PROTECT will communicate with the Nest Thermostat to shut off the furnace. A little pricey though… with the Nest Thermostat and in a typical 3 bed room home the package could run you upwards of $700.00. Amazon is taking pre-orders now and the release is targeted in November of 2013.

    | ControlTrends, yet I never found any interesting article
like yours. It’s pretty worth enough for me. In my view,
if all website owners and bloggers made good content as you
did, the internet will be a lot more useful than ever before.
