It is time to nominate your favorite people, products, solutions and companies, for the 2018 ControlTrends Awards.
The top 5 to 6 in each category will move on to the ControlTrends Awards finals.
If you don’t already see your nominee on the ballot, or don’t already see a nominee in a category, please use the other option, and write in your choice, we will then add them on to the ballot. (Make sure not to check the option 1 box — if you are the first to write in a candidate, as this will result in an error code saying “too many choices.” Just un-click the Option one box, and your ballot will work).
Please send this post and link to your network and encourage them to vote.

In a rare podcast interview Elon Musk, joins Joe Rogan (one of my favs) among other things they discuss the future of AI and how it will effect everything and everyone (yes, Ken Sinclair, even Smart Buildings).
This is intriguing, scary, thought-provoking, and controversial. This is when Elon Musk allegedly smokes pot during the interview and sends Tesla stock tumbling.
Caution: please beware there is lot of bad language and behavior in this video, but it’s worth it in my humble opinion.
Ken and I first noticed the controls Industry was in a renaissance period in Paris, at the EASYIO global conference. Sitting at a side walk cafe, drinking cafe au lait, discussing what we had seen and heard from the participants at the event,it became apparent that the smart building controls world as we had known it was changing and would never be the same. If ControlTrends’ Young Gun, Alper Üzmezler, managing partner at BASSG, is correct with his theory that the way DDC software is done today is redundant — costly and inefficient, and if he can deliver the promises of Project Sandstar, then the smart building controls world as we know it — is getting ready to change forever.
What Sandstar allows — is for independent Direct Digital Controls to merge Sedona with Haystack — into a seamless whole, which according to Alper, means you would eliminate the need for each individual manufacturer’s software. If this works, the implications as a minimum, would represent a similar effect to Elon Musk’s electric car, and might be as revolutionary as the computer replacing the typewriter. [Read more…]
Ken Smyers, digs in at RealComm|IBcon and talks with the team at Lucid about how their products will add to the great product portfolio Acuity Brands already has like DG Logik and Distech. Lucid provides a data and analytics platform to make data-driven decisions to improve building efficiency and drive energy conservation and savings. Its SaaS-based BuildingOS platform enables owners, operators, and occupants to gain powerful insights into the operations of their buildings, providing the ability to make them more efficient and improve the performance of the people and businesses utilizing these strategic assets.
Ken and I have seen companies like Intel, Dell, Google and others showing up more and more at meetings like RealComm Ibcon and have wondered how they will affect the smart buildings controls world as we know it. We have gone back and forth wondering if the players from Silicon Valley had nefarious motives that would leave the players in the ControlTrends community as road kill, or if they were coming to play nice and work with the existing smart building controls players.
On this video, Ken does a little detective work at the 2018 RealComm Ibcon conference and investigates how Microsoft is stepping into our world. Nice job Ken!
