Discussions included best practices and real-life examples of how IoT is changed the business we work in.
TECHNOLOGY TRACK: For programmers and engineers. Integration Lifecycle
This session dove deep into concepts and best practices surrounding the “Integration Lifecycle.” Topics included: Network Planning, N4 System Database, Tag Dictionaries and Hierarchy Planning, Templates, Authenticators, Virtual Points, N4 Analytics, and Responsive Panes.
ControlTrends had the opportunity to interview one of the most dynamic forces within the Smart Building industry, Cochrane Supply’s, Mike Mitchell. As CTO, Mike has helped Cochrane Supply emerge as one of the leading systems distributors in North America. Mike really, really likes his position and shares many of the great aspects of working with Scott Cochrane and the super team at Cochrane Supply.
Scott Cochrane welcomed the more than 600 attendees at the 2019 Controls-Con General Session with the caveat that we, as an industry, are now stewards of data. Systems distributors and systems integrators now have a significant influence on the data structure put into place on behalf of our customers. What we leave behind will be the watermark measure of our abilities and ultimately, the signature of our performance. It’s time for us to develop or acquire IT savvy, and add it to our portfolio.
Four notable experts than followed with varying industry insights: Ken Sinclair, Owner & Founder of Automated Buildings; Laurent Vernerey, President of the Acuity Brands Technology Group; Jim Morris, VP and GM of Global Business Management Systems at Johnson; Kevin Smith, Chief Technology Officer, Tridium Controls; and Jim Young, Founder of the Realcomm Conference Group.
The General Session ended with a panel discussion and brief Q & A with the audience. Day 1 concluded with a Reception and Exhibitor Showcase, followed by the Dinner and Awards Program and musical entertainment.

the CONTROLS-CON 2019 registration!
We begin our interview with Scott Cochrane, President and CEO of Cochrane Supply and Engineering, with the question, “Where’s the APP?” The answer to that question is becoming the measurement of success and the driver to both the user’s experience and their bottom line. Scott’s underpinning principle is to “bring technology into the building space.”
Scott continues, “We’re not dealing with the maintenance staff anymore. The conversation now is with the C-Suite who has an entirely different mentality and set of expectations. And, it’s not just about saving energy anymore. It’s about creating business efficiencies. Distributors must have IT competence. The same goes for Vendors.”
