Published on Jul 19, 2017. Heating and cooling account for roughly 48% of the energy use in a typical U.S. home, making it the largest energy expense for most families. In the commercial building sector, the cost is approximately 40%. Johnson Controls, one of the leading providers of HVAC, Fire and Security systems in the world, is changing how spaces are viewed and controlled. As the inventors of the first thermostat, Johnson Controls has innovated once again with GLAS. Utilizing Windows 10 IoT Core, Cortana voice services, and Azure Cloud, GLAS is a simple to use, elegant thermostat that brings leading energy savings and air quality monitoring to everyday spaces. Johnson Controls is reinventing the thermostat and our lives.

John Naisbitt, inventor of “Megatrends” (watch below) would have to be proud of COMFY’s High Touch solution to a challenging High Tech problem. As building management systems (BMS) continue to increase energy efficiency, the satisfaction of the building occupants could well be decreasing — because the occupants are not comfortable and they assume the technologies around them — are being used against them, and please, the use of dummy (placebo) thermostats has run its course.
The COMFY solution, people-centered intelligence for buildings, is delivered without a lot kicking and scratching — an ethernet connection to any BACnet BMS system and COMFY puts people back into the equation — very accurately, as the most important and vital sensor input variable. Comfy delivers instant high-touch by providing instant streams of warm or cool air to people while also using high-tech machine learning in the background to reduce energy use. The high touch words “Warm my Space” or “Cool my Space” or better yet, “I’m Comfy,” replace the set points and the numeric temperature displays. COMFY’s contextualized technology allows users to pinpoint their locations yielding optimized zoning. The energy savings generated by COMFY occupants (over 20%) are impressive.
This form of digital hugging and providing occupants with a relevant experience in the context and time that’s most relevant to them is becoming critical as more and more high tech is delivered.
“In our craving for emotional authenticity, Naisbitt locates the great challenge of our frenetic era.”

Mom and Dad… I want to be a hacker when I grow up!”What if your child said this to you? What would you do? I would ask them which kind. Yes, which kind. If they said a white hat hacker I would not only say yes but I would try and help them. If you don’t know what a white hat hacker is, they are the good guys. In today’s society (at least to me) white hat hackers are the fireman, solider, policeman, etc. that we use to say when asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?” White hat hackers, cyber warfare teams, etc. are truly our frontline in defense of not only our corporate networks but our country’s infrastructure as well.

Apple took a dive into the connected home at its Worldwide Developer Conference on Monday with its official announcement of Home Kit, which will allow the iPhone or iPad to become the remote control for an entire home.
Apple’s Home Kit allows devices such as garage doors, door locks, lights, webcams and thermostats to be certified as ‘Made for iPhone/iPad/iPod’ or MFi. Each device can be accessed through the Home Kit app, rather than juggling each manufacturer’s app separately, according to Craig Federighi, SVP of software engineering at Apple.

Inexpensive transition to digital technology creates efficient, comfortable buildings! MILWAUKEE – Johnson Controls, a global multi-industrial company, released a new series of pneumatic-to-digital thermostats, the WT-4000. The WT-4000 series efficiently converts older pneumatic room control systems and enables communication with newer digital building automation systems.
The WT-4000 series provides the benefits of a digital control system, including programmable occupancy scheduling and remote temperature monitoring, which can result in increased energy and operational savings. The new thermostats are long-life battery operated and require no additional wiring, resulting in minimum upfront costs and disruptions to the building’s structure or occupants.
“This is another industry-leading innovation by the company that invented the first pneumatic controls system 119 years ago,” said Terry Pierson, product manager, Johnson Controls. “This new 21st century series of thermostats allows buildings with older pneumatic control systems to enter the digital world.”
The new thermostats are ideal for commercial buildings, schools and critical environments like hospitals, which cannot afford to disrupt occupants or undergo expensive upgrades, but also want the benefits of digital information and efficiency. The WT-4000 Series thermostats come in eight different configurations and offer either Fahrenheit or Celsius displays.

Great job to Eugene Mazo and his team at DGLogik for this innovative hotel room solution interfacing a full compliment of EnOcean wireless and self-powered devices with DG Lux, the industry’s leading visualization and graphic software. Could this be the next high-end hotel room controller? My guess is that it won’t be long before Eugene and his team figure out how to recreate the conventional thermostat with a DG Stat version of what we watched in the video — and make thermostats like the Nest look like a thing of the past. In 2015 could DGLogik, who is up for numerous awards at the 2013 ControlTrends Awards, add the 2015 Thermostat Control of the Year to their accomplishments?
